With the development of Porsche racing prototypes in the second half of the 1960s, beginning in 1966 with the Type 906 and culminating in the Porsche 917 from 1969 to 1973, Ferdinand Piëch ushered in a new era in racing car construction at Porsche. In retrospect, the development of the Porsche 917 is certainly one of the most daring decisions made by the then still small manufacturer from Zuffenhausen, but the new racing car, together with the 908 and 907 models, propelled the company to the forefront of international motorsport. Putting all their eggs in one basket had paid off for Porsche.
Extreme lightweight construction was the top priority for the usually white factory prototypes, which were optimized and pushed to the limit for one single goal: race wins. Towards this purpose, Porsche also started using MOMO Prototipo steering wheels, which were perfect for Porsche racing cars of the era with their small diameter and low weight. In the following years, they were also widely used by many privateer teams fielding Porsche 911s in circuit races, road races, and hill climbs. The victories at Sebring, Daytona, the Targa Florio, the Nürburgring, Watkins Glen, Le Mans, and elsewhere speak for themselves.
The earliest Prototipo wheels featured the name prototipo engraved in lowercase, sans-serif letters on the centre spoke. Later, the name was painted instead. The spokes – either anodised silver or black – had two or three holes, which gradually increased in size towards the steering column, a distinctive design feature.
Moretti sold MOMO in 1996, but under its current owners, the Prototipo remains true to its original form.
Among Porsche enthusiasts, MOMO Prototipo is iconic. It is one of the most popular steering wheels for early Porsche 911, 912, and 914 hot rods – so much so that Porsche decided to create its own version, making it available to all Porsche owners.
MOMO Prototipo Porsche Classic Steering Wheel is a tribute to that heritage. Wrapped in premium black leather, it features Porsche lettering on a white background – an unmistakable nod to its racing legacy. The Prototipo lettering, also in white, pays homage to the white-painted prototype race cars from Zuffenhausen. Subtle black stitching completes the design with understated elegance.
Just like the original from the late 1960s, this steering wheel was manufactured by MOMO, including the original lettering and exclusively for Porsche, as a tribute to one of the most successful and formative eras of Porsche racing.
Steering wheel comes with a MOMO Porsche horn button, made from genuine leather and embossed with a classic Porsche crest.
Please note that a steering wheel hub is required for installation.
